A stone sculptor from Emyvale, Co.Monaghan Marc Kelly is an artist whose work can be found in galleries and public spaces throughout Ireland. Following on from his Fine Art studies in 2006 he trained within the stone industry in Ireland and was able to establish a successful career from there. Kelly now works on public and private projects while hosting classes and demonstrations at seasonal periods throughout the year.
His work has been commissioned and purchased by government bodies, private collectors while exhibiting in Ireland, the UK and USA. Known for his unique style and approach to stone sculpture Kelly employs traditional techniques combined with modern concepts which reveals exciting skillful works.
During the course students will learn everything from health and safety practices, carving techniques, sharpening tools, drawing designs, stone categories, finishing styles and displaying a finished work. For starters I will introduce everyone to a local Sandstone. This pale stone from Fermanagh is perfect for learning the basics of stone carving, it can be easily worked and has a very attractive finish.
There is no gender or physique requirements rather an understanding to tooling, your stone and techniques are the key skills in this ancient craft. I will teach everything from letter carving, high and low relief work, 2D/3D sculpting. Supplied for the class are health and safety equipment, a variety of tungsten tipped carving chisels, a stone carvers mallet, measuring/drawing equipment, sandstone.
This 2 day class is a very rewarding and uplifting experience. In most instances students who participate will continue with stone carving in some capacity in the future.
